579 How You Should Perform Your Duty

Verse 1

If people can’t express what they ought to

or achieve what’s possible for them while serving,

but just go through the motions and fool God,

they’ve lost the function of a created being.

These people are mediocrities,

useless refuse, unfit to be called created beings.

Are they not corrupt, shining on the outside

but rotten within?

Chorus

When people fail to do their duty,

they should feel guilty and indebted,

despise their weakness and rebellion

and give their life to God.

Such people are created beings who love God.

Only they can enjoy His blessings,

worthy of God’s promises

and being made perfect by Him.

Verse 2

How do most of you treat God living among you?

How have you done your duties before Him?

Have you done all you can, even at the cost of your life?

What have you sacrificed, though God’s given you so much?

How loyal are you and how have you served God?

What of all God’s bestowed and done for you?

Have you compared all this against your conscience?

Who could your words and work be worthy of?

Pre-chorus 1

Could it be that your small sacrifice

is worthy of all God has bestowed upon you?

Chorus

When people fail to do their duty,

they should feel guilty and indebted,

despise their weakness and rebellion

and give their life to God.

Such people are created beings who love God.

Only they can enjoy His blessings,

worthy of God’s promises

and being made perfect by Him.

Verse 3

God has been wholly devoted to you,

yet you’re halfhearted towards Him with evil thoughts.

Is this not your duty, your only function?

Have you ever performed the duty of a created being?

How can you be considered a created being?

Is it not clear what you express and live out?

You’ve failed your duty but seek God’s tolerance and grace,

but that is not prepared for ones worthless as you.

Pre-chorus 2

It is only kept for those who ask

for nothing and gladly sacrifice for God.

Chorus

When people fail to do their duty,

they should feel guilty and indebted,

despise their weakness and rebellion

and give their life to God.

Such people are created beings who love God.

Only they can enjoy His blessings,

worthy of God’s promises

and being made perfect by Him.
