26. The Principles of Obeying the Work of the Holy Spirit
1. You absolutely must obey the inner enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of God’s words; it is the work of the Holy Spirit and God’s words which perfect man;
2. You must obey the sovereignty and arrangements of the Holy Spirit, and you must accept and obey all the pruning and dealing, the disciplining and chastening, and the trials and refinement that come from the Holy Spirit;
3. You must obey the work arrangements, sermons and fellowship of the man used by the Holy Spirit, for this is a part of the work of the Holy Spirit;
4. You must obey the enlightenment and illumination that has arisen from the Holy Spirit of all levels of leaders and workers and brothers and sisters, and obey their fellowships that conform to the truth.
Relevant Words of God:
You cannot simply obey when you please and disobey when you do not. This kind of obedience does not meet with God’s approval. If you cannot keep pace with the new work I fellowship and continue to hold on to the former sayings, then how can there be progress in your life? God’s work is to supply you through His words. When you obey and accept His words, then the Holy Spirit shall surely work in you. The Holy Spirit works exactly in the way I speak. Do as I have said, and the Holy Spirit will promptly work in you. I release a new light for you to see and bring you into the light of the present time. When you walk into this light, the Holy Spirit will immediately work in you. There are some who may be recalcitrant, saying, “I simply will not carry out what you say.” Then I tell you that you have now come to the end of the road, you are dried up, and have no more life. Therefore, in experiencing the transformation of your disposition, it is most crucial to keep pace with the present light.
from “Those Who Obey God With a True Heart Shall Surely Be Gained by God” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
If you follow and seek whatever the Holy Spirit says, you are someone who obeys Him, and this way you will be able to have a change in disposition. Man’s disposition changes with the Holy Spirit’s current words; if you always uphold your old past experiences and rules, your disposition will not change. If the Holy Spirit spoke today to tell all people to enter into a life of normal humanity but you continue to focus on the surface and you are confused about reality and do not take it seriously, you will be someone who is not keeping up with His work and you will not be someone who has entered the path led by the Holy Spirit.
from “People Whose Dispositions Have Changed Are Those Who Have Entered Into the Reality of God’s Words” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
In their work, workers must pay attention to two points: One is to do the work exactly according to the principles stipulated by the work arrangements. Workers must not violate these principles, not work according to their own imaginations, and not according to their own will. They should show concern for the work of God’s family, and put the interests of the family of God first in everything they do. The other point is also key, and that is, in everything they do, to pay attention to following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and to do everything strictly in keeping with the word of God. If you disobey the guidance of the Holy Spirit or if you stubbornly follow your own mind and do things according to your own imagination, this constitutes a most serious opposition to God. Frequently disobeying the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit leads to a dead end. There is no way to go on with work if one has lost the work of the Holy Spirit, and though one does work, nothing is accomplished. It is these two main principles to abide by while at work: One is to perform the work exactly according to the arrangements from the above, and to perform tasks with the principles that have been set forth by the above. The other point is to follow guidance from the Holy Spirit within. … Inner guidance from the Holy Spirit is not at all transcendental. It is in fact very normal: The inner reaches of your soul know this is the right way to do it, and that this is the best way. Such an idea is very clear; it is not the result of cogitation, and sometimes you do not fully understand why to do it this way. This is often none other than enlightenment from the Holy Spirit. Such a situation is what occurs most commonly in most people. The Holy Spirit guides you to act in the most appropriate way. It is not the result of your consideration, rather you have a feeling in your heart and you intuit that this is the best way to do it. Perhaps this is from the Holy Spirit. One’s own will is often the result of the thought process and is colored by their own ideas: What’s in it for me, how I will benefit—these are part of anything that people determine to do themselves. Guidance from the Holy Spirit in no way contains such adulterations. It is necessary to pay careful attention to the guidance or enlightenment from the Holy Spirit; particularly in key issues you must be careful in order to grasp it. People who think too much, who like to act on their own ideas are most likely to miss it. Good workers, promising workers, pay attention to the work of the Holy Spirit. People who obey the Holy Spirit fear God and seek truth tirelessly. … In order to fulfill the work that God entrusts it is necessary to comprehend these two principles. You must strictly adhere to the work arrangements from the above, and you must pay attention to obeying guidance from the Holy Spirit. Only when these two principles are grasped can work be effective and the will of God be satisfied.
from “The Main Principles of How Workers Work” in Records of Christ’s Talks
God indeed does a lot of work on people, sometimes trying them, sometimes creating environments to temper them, and sometimes speaking words to guide them and amend their shortcomings. Sometimes the Holy Spirit leads people to environments prepared by God for them to unknowingly discover many things that they lack. Through what people say and do, the way that people treat others and deal with things, without their knowing it, the Holy Spirit enlightens them to understand many things that were not understood before, allowing them to comprehend many things or people more thoroughly, allowing them to see into many things of which they were previously unaware.
from “On Experience” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
There are times when the Holy Spirit disciplines you from within, and this discipline comes from God’s judgment; there are times when God reproaches you and hides His face from you, when He pays you no heed, and does not work within you, soundlessly chastising you in order to refine you. God’s work in man is primarily in order to make plain His righteous disposition. What testimony does man ultimately bear to God? He testifies that God is the righteous God, that His disposition is righteousness, wrath, chastisement, and judgment; man testifies to the righteous disposition of God. God uses His judgment to make man perfect, He has been loving man, and saving man—but how much is contained within His love? There is judgment, majesty, wrath, and curse. Though God cursed man in the past, He did not completely cast man into the bottomless pit, but used that means to refine man’s faith; He did not put man to death, but acted in order to make man perfect. The essence of the flesh is that which is of Satan—God said it exactly right—but the facts carried out by God are not completed according to His words. He curses you so that you might love Him, and so that you might know the essence of the flesh; He chastises you in order that you might be awakened, to allow you to know the deficiencies within you, and to know man’s utter unworthiness. Thus, God’s curses, His judgment, and His majesty and wrath—they are all in order to make man perfect. All that God does today, and the righteous disposition that He makes plain within you—it is all in order to make man perfect, and such is the love of God.

7. In work and matters of the church, apart from obeying God, in everything you should follow the instructions of the man who is used by the Holy Spirit. Even the slightest infraction is unacceptable. You must be absolute in your compliance, and must not analyze right or wrong; what’s right or wrong has nothing to do with you. You must only concern yourself with total obedience.
from “The Ten Administrative Decrees That Must Be Obeyed by God’s Chosen People in the Age of Kingdom” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
The work carried out by the one who is used by God is in order to cooperate with the work of Christ or the Holy Spirit. This man is raised up by God among man, he is there to lead all of God’s chosen ones, and he is also raised up by God in order to do the work of human cooperation. With someone such as this, who is able to do the work of human cooperation, more of God’s requirements toward man and the work that the Holy Spirit must do among man can be achieved through him. Another way of putting it is like this: God’s aim in using this man is so that all those who follow God can better understand God’s will, and can attain more of God’s requirements. Because people are incapable of directly understanding God’s words or God’s will, God has raised someone up who is used to carry out such work. This person who is used by God can also be described as a medium by which God guides people, as the “translator” who communicates between God and people. … the man who is used by God is raised up by Him, he is prepared by God for God’s work, and he cooperates in the work of God Himself. No person could ever stand in for his work, it is human cooperation that is integral to the divine work. … He has been prepared and made perfect in advance by the Holy Spirit, and is completely led by the Holy Spirit, and, particularly when it comes to his work, he is directed and commanded by the Holy Spirit—as a result of which there is no deviation on the path of leading God’s chosen ones, for God surely takes responsibility for His own work, and God does His own work at all times.
from “Concerning God’s Use of Man” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
What is it to accept truth? It means that no matter which corrupt disposition you have or which venom of the great red dragon poisons your nature, you acknowledge it when it is revealed by God’s word and submit to God’s word with utter conviction. And, you know yourself according to God’s word. This is what it means to accept God’s word. No matter what God says, no matter how piercing to the heart, no matter what words He uses, you can accept it as long as it is truth, and you can acknowledge it as long as it conforms to reality. You can submit to God’s word regardless of how deeply you understand it, and you accept and submit to the light of enlightenment from the Holy Spirit that is communicated by the brothers and sisters. When such a person’s pursuit of truth has reached a certain point, he can obtain truth and achieve the transformation of his disposition.
from “How to Know Man’s Nature” in Records of Christ’s Talks
The Holy Spirit not only works in certain men who are used by God, but even more in the church. He could be working in anyone. He may work in you for the present, and when you have experienced it, He may work in someone else next. Make haste to follow; the more closely you follow the present light, the more your life can mature and grow. No matter what manner of man he may be, so long as the Holy Spirit works in him, make sure to follow. Take in his experiences through your own, and you will receive even higher things. In so doing you will progress more quickly. This is the path of perfection for man and a way through which life grows. The path to being made perfect is reached through your obedience to the work of the Holy Spirit. You do not know through what kind of person God will work to perfect you, nor through what person, occurrence, or thing He will enable you to enter into possession and to gain some insight. If you are able to walk onto this right track, it shows that there is great hope for you to be perfected by God. If you are unable to do so, it shows that your future is bleak and devoid of light. Once you get on the right track, you will gain revelation in all things. No matter what the Holy Spirit may reveal to others, if you proceed on the basis of their knowledge to experience things on your own, then this experience will become a part of your life, and you will be able to supply others out of this experience. Those who supply others by parroting words are people who have not had any experiences; you must learn to find, through the enlightenment and illumination of others, a way of practice before you can begin to speak of your own actual experience and knowledge. This will be of greater benefit to your own life. You should experience in this way, obeying all that comes from God. You should seek the will of God in all things and study the lessons in all things, that your life may mature and grow. This kind of practice affords the fastest progress.
from “Those Who Obey God With a True Heart Shall Surely Be Gained by God” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
The Man’s Fellowship:
If you only concern yourself with obeying the word of God, and putting the truth into practice, when you pursue the truth you are illuminated by the Holy Spirit. Act according to the illumination of the Holy Spirit and practice according to the new illumination received, and without knowing it you are obeying the work of the Holy Spirit, without knowing it you are obeying the illumination of the Holy Spirit. When you have more new enlightenment in putting the truth into practice, there is an increase in the component of your obedience to the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when putting the truth into practice, without being aware of it you are actually obeying the work of the Holy Spirit. If for some time you have no new enlightenment of the truth, and you only practice according to the truth received in the past, your obedience at this time is only obeying the authority of God’s word, and it does not involve any new work of the Holy Spirit. If you have new illumination from the words of God as well as even deeper knowledge, and you practice according to this new illumination, new enlightenment and deeper knowledge, would you say that this is obeying the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit? This is obeying the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit. It is obeying the authority of the word of God, as well as obeying the authority of the work of the Holy Spirit; it is killing two birds with one stone. Therefore, obeying the authority of the work of the Holy Spirit is mainly to obey the Holy Spirit’s enlightenment and illumination. Let’s put it in most simple terms: Does man’s true knowledge of the word of God originate with the Holy Spirit? It all originates with the Holy Spirit’s enlightenment and illumination. Therefore, when you are putting each truth into practice, particularly when you have even deeper knowledge of the substance of that truth, this is obeying the work of the Holy Spirit, and obeying the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit. Would you say that all such people as those who obey the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit have true obedience to the authority of God’s word? They also have true obedience to it. The work of the Holy Spirit is many-faceted. The work that is undertaken on those who pursue the truth is principally enlightenment and illumination of God’s word, leading them to understand and enter into all truths. He principally performs this work but there is another task that is also worked by the Holy Spirit. While you experience and put into practice the word of God, He guides you, and enlightens you. Regarding your duties, your living environment, and the things that you encounter, He guides you to understand and enter into the truth, and to enter into reality. When you eat and drink the word of God He enlightens you to understand God’s word. In real life He will lead you to enter into the reality of the truth. This is the principle of the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, many people experience the guidance of the word of God, the discipline of God’s word, as well as experiencing the Holy Spirit’s discipline of man, the Holy Spirit’s restraining of man, and the Holy Spirit’s guiding of man. Sometimes the Holy Spirit restrains man from doing this or that. When you imagine doing this or that, the environment does not allow you to take action. That is the Holy Spirit making use of the environment to restrain you. Man’s environment is under God’s control and arrangement and it is also under the control and arrangement of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit controls and arranges man’s environment as well as people, affairs, and things. Therefore, in your individual living environment you should pray in all things, and through prayer you will act in accordance with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. At times, He will grace you with a few words through enlightenment and unexpectedly God’s word will appear within you. As soon as you think of these words of God, it seems as if your previous plans are not practical. At times, you practice according to these words of God; at other times, because of these words of God, your plans and arrangements for that day will change. At times, your route or destination for carrying out your duties is arranged through the environment. These all come from the control and arrangements of the Holy Spirit.
from “How the Four Principles for Obedience to God Ought to Be Put Into Practice” in Sermons and Fellowship on Entry Into Life (VI)
To be obedient to God means to be obedient to the truth, to the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit, and most importantly and practically to the work arrangements, fellowship, and sermons of the above, because the majority of these originate in the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit. Also, at times the Holy Spirit will give special enlightenment and illumination to individuals, so the work arrangements, sermons, and fellowship of the man used by the Holy Spirit are only a portion of the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit, not the entirety. Remember this: They are only a portion. If anyone says the work arrangements, sermons, and fellowship of the man used by the Holy Spirit are the entirety of the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit, he is wrong, because this view is a mistake. The portion of the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit made up of the work arrangements, sermons, and fellowship of the man used by the Holy Spirit is something that God’s chosen people must practice and the reality they must enter into, and upon this basis, the Holy Spirit also provides enlightenment and illumination to each pursuer of truth through specific environments and backgrounds, which also cannot be ignored. Obedience to God’s work means obedience to the inner enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit, but also to the work arrangements, sermons, and fellowship of the man used by the Holy Spirit. Only when you have possessed obedience to both of these things can you be called someone who is truly obedient to God’s work.
