68. The Principles of Fearing God

1. You must be clear that God scrutinizes the innermost heart of man and scrutinizes all things. God knows man’s intentions and designs like the palm of His hand—this is the minimum knowledge you should have of God;

2. You must understand God’s administrative decrees and commandments, and you must also seek the truth, so as to have true knowledge of God’s disposition and to give rise to a God-fearing heart;

3. You must keep careful account of God’s intentions in all things, and be able to pray to God and seek the truth frequently. Only by remaining vigilant and showing consideration to God’s will can keep you from defying God;

4. No matter how God works, whether it conforms to man’s conceptions or not, and no matter how the Holy Spirit guides you, you must have the intention to obey. If you don’t understand, then you should seek the truth.

Relevant Words of God:

I certainly do not favor anyone. I sincerely love you who sincerely love Me, and My wrath will ever be with those who don’t sincerely love Me, so that they may always remember that I am the true God, the God who examines the innermost heart of man. Don’t act one way to others’ faces but another way behind their backs, as I see clearly everything you do and though you may fool others you cannot fool Me. I see it all clearly. It is not possible for you to conceal anything; all is within My hands. Don’t think yourself clever, making all your selfish calculations ready. I say to you, man can make a thousand plans, or ten thousand plans, but in the end they cannot escape from the palm of My hand. All things and events are administered in My hands, how much more so is one person! Don’t try to avoid or hide, don’t cheat or conceal. Can you not see that My glorious countenance, My wrath and My judgment has been publicly revealed? I will judge immediately and without mercy all those who do not want Me sincerely. My pity has come to its end and there is no more left. Don’t be hypocritical anymore and stop your wild ways.

from “The Forty-fourth Utterance” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

No one can fathom the nature of man except Me, and they all think that they are loyal to Me, not knowing that their loyalty is impure. These impurities will ruin people for they are a scheme of the great red dragon. It was long ago laid bare by Me; I am the almighty God, and would I not understand something so simple? I am able to penetrate your blood and your flesh to see your intentions. It is not hard for Me to fathom man’s nature, but people try to be smart alecks, thinking that no one but themselves know their intentions. Don’t they know that the almighty God exists within the heavens and earth and all things?

from “The One Hundred and Eighteenth Utterance” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

Hearing My words most people fear and tremble with a worried frown. Have I wronged you? Could it be that you are not one of the children of the great red dragon? You are pretending to be good! And pretending to be My firstborn son! Do you think I am blind? Do you think I cannot distinguish between people? I am the God who searches people’s innermost hearts: This is what I tell My sons and what I also tell you—the children of the great red dragon. I see everything clearly, with no error at all. How could I not know what I do? I am crystal clear about it! Why do I say that I am God Himself, the Creator of all things in the universe? Why do I say that I am the God who examines people’s innermost hearts? I am well aware of every person’s situation. Do you think I don’t know what to do or what to say? This is not your concern—be careful not to be killed by My hand; in that way you would suffer loss. My administrative decree is not forgiving. Do you understand?

from “The Eighty-eighth Utterance” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

I exhort you to get a better understanding of the content of the administrative decrees, and make an effort to know the disposition of God. Otherwise, you will find it difficult to keep your lips sealed and your tongues from wagging too freely with high-sounding talk, and you will unwittingly offend against the disposition of God and fall into the darkness, losing the presence of the Holy Spirit and the light. For you are unprincipled in your actions. If you do or say that which you should not, then you shall receive a fitting retribution. You should know that, although you are unprincipled in word and deed, God is very principled in both. ... If in your actions you do not offend against the disposition of God, and you seek the will of God and have a heart of reverence for God, then your faith is up to the standard. Whoever does not revere God and does not have a heart that trembles in fear will easily transgress against the administrative decrees of God. Many serve God on the strength of their passion, but have no understanding of the administrative decrees of God, still less any inkling of the implications of His words. And so, with their good intentions, they often wind up doing things that disrupt God’s management. In serious cases, they are thrown out, deprived of any further chance of following Him, and are cast into hell, all association with His house at an end.

from “Three Admonitions” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

If you do not understand the disposition of God, then it will be impossible for you to do the work you should do for Him. If you do not know the substance of God, then it will be impossible for you to show Him reverence and fear, but instead only heedless perfunctoriness and prevarication, and moreover, incorrigible blasphemy. Although understanding God’s disposition is indeed important and knowing God’s substance must not be slighted, no one has ever thoroughly examined or delved into these issues. It is plain to see that you have all dismissed the administrative decrees I have promulgated. If you do not understand the disposition of God, then you will easily offend His disposition. Such an offense is tantamount to enraging God Himself, and the ultimate fruit of your action becomes a transgression against the administrative decrees. Now you should realize that understanding God’s disposition comes with knowing His substance, and that along with understanding God’s disposition comes understanding the administrative decrees. Certainly, many of the administrative decrees touch upon the disposition of God, but His disposition has not been expressed in its entirety within them. Hence you need to go one step further in developing your understanding of God’s disposition.

from “It Is Very Important to Understand God’s Disposition” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

Every sentence I have spoken contains within it the disposition of God. You would do well to ponder My words carefully, and you will surely profit greatly from them. The substance of God is very difficult to grasp, but I trust that you all have at least some idea about the disposition of God. I hope, then, that you will show Me and do more of that which does not offend the disposition of God. Then will I be reassured. For example, keep God in your heart at all times. When you act, do so according to His words. Seek out His intentions in all things, and refrain from doing that which disrespects and dishonors God. Even less should you put God in the back of your mind to fill the future void in your heart. If you do this, you will have offended the disposition of God. Again, supposing you never make blasphemous remarks or complaints against God throughout your life, and again, supposing you are able to discharge properly all that He has entrusted to you and also to submit to all His words throughout your life, then you will have successfully avoided transgressing against the administrative decrees. For example, if you have ever said, “Why do I not think that He is God?” “I think that these words are nothing more than some enlightenment of the Holy Spirit,” “In my opinion, not everything God does is necessarily right,” “The humanity of God is not superior to mine,” “The words of God are simply not believable,” or other such judgmental remarks, then I exhort you to confess and repent your sins more often. Otherwise, you will never have a chance at forgiveness, for you offend not a man, but God Himself. You may believe that you are judging a man, but the Spirit of God does not consider it that way. Your disrespect of His flesh is equal to disrespecting Him. This being so, have you not offended God’s disposition? You must remember that all that is done by the Spirit of God is done in order to safeguard His work in the flesh and in order that this work be done well. If you neglect this, then I say that you are someone who will never be able to succeed in believing in God. For you have provoked the wrath of God, so He shall use fitting punishment to teach you a lesson.

from “It Is Very Important to Understand God’s Disposition” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

You must listen to all the words that the Holy Spirit teaches; don’t drop them by the wayside. So many times you have heard My words and then forgotten them. Oh, thoughtless ones! You have lost so much blessing! You must now listen carefully and heed My words, fellowship more with Me and get closer to Me. I will teach you about anything you don’t understand, and I will lead you on the onward path. … You must watch your step, protect your heart and live always before Me, communicate with Me, get close to Me and I will let you see that which you don’t understand. You must watch what you say, keep a close eye on your heart at all times and walk the path I walk.

from “The Twenty-sixth Utterance” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

God is always in the hearts of those who genuinely believe in God and they always carry within them a God-revering heart, a God-loving heart. Those who believe in God should do things with a cautious and prudent heart, and all they do should be in accordance with God’s requirements and be able to satisfy the heart of God. They should not be headstrong, doing whatever they please; that does not befit saintly propriety. People cannot flaunt God’s banner and run amok with it everywhere, swaggering and swindling everywhere; doing this is the most rebellious conduct. Families have rules and nations have laws, so how much more does God’s family have strict standards? Does it not more so have administrative decrees? People are free to do what they want, but the administrative decrees of God cannot be altered at will. God is a God who does not allow people to offend Him and God is a God who puts people to death—do people really not know this already?

from “A Warning to Those Who Do Not Practice the Truth” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

Not doing things in accordance with truth is doing things according to their own will, and doing things based on their own will is leaving God; that is, God is not in their heart. Human ideas usually look good and right to people and they look like they do not violate truth that much. People feel that doing it this way is putting truth into practice, they feel that doing it this way is submitting to God. Actually, people are not really seeking God and praying to God about this. They are not striving to do it well to satisfy God’s will, nor striving to do it well according to His requirements. They do not have this true situation, and they don’t have such desire. This is the greatest error people make in their practice, because you believe in God, but God is not in your heart. How is this not a sin? How is this not deceiving yourself? What effect will believing this way have? Where is the practical significance in believing in God?

… No matter what you are doing, no matter how big the matter is, and regardless of whether you are fulfilling your duty in God’s family, or whether it is your private matter, you must consider whether this matter conforms with God’s will, whether this matter is something a person with humanity should do, and whether or not what you are doing would make God happy. You need to think about these things. If you practice in this way, then you are a person who seeks the truth and a person who truly believes in God. If you devoutly treat every matter and every truth this way, then you will be able to transform your disposition. Some people think that they are doing something personal, so they ignore the truth, do it as they wish, and do it in whatever way makes them happy, and in whatever way is advantageous to them; they don’t give the slightest amount of consideration to how it affects God’s family and they don’t consider whether or not it is in accordance with the order of the saints. Finally, when they are finished with the matter, they are dark inside and uncomfortable. Is this not a worthy retribution? If you do things that are not approved by God, then you have offended God. If people are not fond of truth, and frequently do things based on their own will, then they will frequently offend God. This kind of person is usually not approved by God in what they do and if they do not repent, then they will not be far from punishment.

from “Seeking God’s Will and Putting Truth Into Practice to the Greatest Extent Possible” in Records of Christ’s Talks

I am a consuming fire and I do not tolerate offense. Because humans were all created by Me, whatever I say and do, people must obey and may not rebel against. People do not have the right to meddle in My work, and they are particularly not qualified to analyze what is right or wrong in My work and My words. I am the Lord of creation, and the creatures should achieve everything that I require with a heart of reverence for Me; they should not reason with Me and they especially should not resist. I am using My authority to reign over My people, and all those who are part of My creation should obey My authority.

from “When Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots You Will Regret All the Evil You Have Done” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

God does not abide by any rules, nor does He treat any stage of His work as unchanging. Rather, the work He does is ever newer and ever higher. His work becomes more and more practical with each step, more and more in line with the actual needs of man. Only after man experiences this kind of work can he attain the final transformation of his disposition. Man’s knowledge of life reaches ever higher levels, and so likewise the work of God reaches ever higher levels. Only in this way can man be made perfect and become fit for God’s use. God works in this way on the one hand to counter and reverse the notions of man, and on the other to lead man into a higher and more realistic state, into the highest realm of belief in God, so that in the end, the will of God can be done. All those of a disobedient nature who willfully oppose shall be left behind by this stage of God’s swift and furiously advancing work; only those who willingly obey and who gladly humble themselves can progress to the end of the road. In this kind of work, all of you should learn how to submit and how to put aside your notions. You should be cautious in every step you take. If you are careless, you will surely become one who is spurned by the Holy Spirit, one who disrupts God in His work.

from “Those Who Obey God With a True Heart Shall Surely Be Gained by God” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

In the past some people had conceptions about what God incarnate does. Subsequent fellowship led to an axiom. This axiom is: Man ought to affirm that all of what God does is correct, that all of it is significant. If man does not understand they should nonetheless submit and not resist. If man has conceptions they will necessarily be shamed. Do people remember these words? Every time something is encountered, they say to themselves: By all means do not have a conception, by all means do not pass judgment on it. There is meaning in everything that God does. Though we may be unable to understand now, one day we will be made to suffer shame. They simply abide by a rule such as this. This kind of rule, however, may solve some problems for believers who are muddleheaded. For a person with understanding these words will help make sense of a lot of things, and to use this rule every time a situation is encountered may elicit a lot of things. What happens if there is no insight? One can only obey rules, and in so doing he can also be protected and avoid violating the administrative decrees, not breeding disaster. This rule is useful! It is not useless! In various places this rule has been learned by heart. Some write it in notebooks, or write it on the book cover, and read it every time they open the book, reciting it. They recite it when they pray. Doing so has some benefits. Some people dare not randomly do things, and have a little reverence in their hearts.

from “How to Satisfy God in the Midst of Trials” in Records of Christ’s Talks

… Whatever God says and does is right, and with God there is no right or wrong. Man must obey God, care for God, satisfy God, and share in His thoughts and concerns. Regardless of whether or not everything God does seems meaningful or appropriate to you, whether it is agreeable to your conceptions, and regardless of whether it makes sense to you or whether it conforms to your imaginations, you must always obey and must have a reverent, submissive heart toward all that God does. After all, isn’t practice such as this in conformity with the truth? Isn’t it the manifestation and practice of love?
