Chapter 49. Whether or Not You Have the Truth Decides Everything
Besides those who have been possessed by evil spirits, no matter what kind of spirit you have within you, man’s nature is the same. Some people always feel that, because they are capable of doing some particular things, there must be something wrong with their spirit; and there are also those who, because they are never able to change, they too feel as though there must be a problem with their spirit. Actually, whether there is a problem with their spirit or not, man’s nature is the same—it defies God and betrays God, with a comparable level of corruption, and this also goes for the universally-shared things that are found within man’s nature. Some people always suspect that there is something wrong with their own spirit, saying, “How could I do this? I never thought I would do such a thing. Is there something wrong with my spirit?” Some people never examine their own spirits no matter what they do. Instead, they examine themselves in this way, saying: “Why have I done this in this way? What is my nature in this? How can I do this in the future in a way that conforms with the truth?” The way people examine themselves and the path of their examination are different. Some people seek the truth, and some people put all their energy into negative states. You must understand now that, no matter what kind of spirit a person has, no one is able to touch or see the things within the spirit. Key attention must be paid to what your nature is and what things exist within your nature; the things that are revealed when you do this prove what kind of nature you have and what kind of nature is a thing of substance; the things that are revealed do not prove what kind of spirit you have.
Once mankind had been corrupted by Satan, their nature became the same. Man all descended from one ancestor, they all live in one world, they have all been through the same corruption, and they all have the same things in common. Yet, some people are capable of doing one kind of thing in one environment, and some people are capable of doing another kind of thing in another environment; some people have some cultural knowledge, having been educated, and some people have no cultural knowledge, having not been educated; some people have one kind of view on things, others have another kind of view on things; some live in one kind of social environment, and some live in another kind of social environment, and they have different inherited customs and living habits. The essence of the things that are revealed within man’s nature, however, is all the same. So there’s no need for you to concern yourself anymore with what kind of spirit you possess. This is something that man cannot reach; only God can know this, and it would be of no use for man to know it. Always wanting to dissect one’s spirit or deliberate over one’s spirit is of no benefit. This is something done by the most ignorant, the most muddle-headed of people. Don’t do something wrong or transgress in some way and then doubt yourself, saying: “Is there something wrong with my spirit? Am I an evil spirit? Is my spirit abnormal? Why do I always do this?” No matter what you do, you should look to your nature for the root of the problem, and seek for the truths that you should enter into. If you examine your spirit, then you will come up empty-handed—even if you come to know what kind of spirit you have within you, you still won’t be able to know your nature, nor will you be able to resolve your problems. Therefore, some people are always talking about what spirit they have as though they are exceptionally spiritual, as though they are exceptionally expert, when in fact they are even more laical, and even more foolish. Some people speak especially spiritually, they feel the words they say are so profound, and that ordinary people won’t understand them. They say things like this, “It is crucial that we examine what our spirits are. If we don’t have human spirits, then though we may believe in God, we will be unable to be saved by God. We must not make God get tired of us.” And so some people are poisoned, and they feel deeply that what has been said to them is reasonable, and they say, “You’re right. I will examine what kind of spirit I have.” Because they pay such particular attention to their spirit, they get neurotic, examining their spirit every time they do something, and eventually they discover a problem, saying: “Why do I go against the truth in everything I do? Why don’t I have even a shred of human sense? I must be an evil spirit.” In fact, with a bad nature and without the truth, how can man do anything good? No matter how good the things they do appear on the surface, they are still at odds with the truth and are still hostile to God. Man’s nature is bad and has been corrupted and processed by Satan; they simply have no human likeness, they utterly rebel against God and defy Him, they are so far from God that they cannot possibly do anything that conforms to God’s will, and within man’s innate nature there is nothing compatible with God. This is all obvious.
Some people are always so neurotic, saying, “Why do I always do things wrong? Why do I always do ignorant things, always do laughable and disgraceful things? Isn’t it because there is something wrong with my spirit?” They see matters of the spirit to be so incredibly important and they put the matter of their nature to one side. This is called “being penny wise and pound foolish”; it is letting go of real matters and putting them to one side, and clinging onto empty, illusory things. Isn’t this foolish? You have deliberated over matters of the spirit for several years, so have you thoroughly understood them? Have you thoroughly understood matters of the soul? Do you know what kind of soul you have? Are you able to feel your soul? Are you able to touch your soul? Are you able to sense what your soul is doing? You don’t know, do you? If you are able to feel or touch some such thing, then it is another spirit inside of you forcefully doing something—having you do and say things. That is something outside of yourself, not inherent to you. Those with an evil spirit will have deep understanding of this. You do not unearth the things of your nature that are within the depths of your soul, you only try to unearth what kind of spirit you have. But are you able to take it out and look at it? Isn’t this like a blind man lighting a candle and wasting the wax? You lay aside your real difficulties and you don’t think about how they can be resolved, you always take the wrong path and are always deliberating about what kind of spirit you have, but can this resolve any problem? You are derelict in your duties in your belief in God by always deliberating about your spirit, and you are the most foolish person. Truly intelligent people have the following attitude: “No matter what God does or how He treats me, no matter how profoundly corrupted I am or what my humanity is like, I will be unswerving in my determination to pursue the truth and to seek to know God.” Only by knowing God can one resolve their corrupt disposition and fulfill their duty to satisfy God’s will; this is the direction for human life, it is what humans should be seeking to achieve, and it is the one and only path to salvation. Now, reality is pursuing the truth, knowing your own corrupt nature, understanding the truth to be free from your corrupt disposition, and being able to perform your duty to God’s satisfaction. Entering into the reality of the truth and living out the likeness of a genuine person—this is reality. Reality is loving God, submitting to God, and bearing testimony to God. These are the results God wants. It is useless to research things that can neither be touched nor seen. They have nothing to do with reality, and also have nothing to do with the effects of God’s work. You are now living in the flesh, so you must seek for those things that you are able to achieve. To determine if someone is possessed by evil spirits, you must look at whether or not they have a normal mental state when they do things. If they do not, then they cannot be saved. Ordinarily, you now have an especially normal sense, you speak normally, and no supernatural or unusual phenomena occur in you. Although sometimes you experience some abnormal states, these are the expressions of your nature, as are some incorrect ways of doing things. In actual fact, you are no different from anyone else, only the background and timing of your expressions are different. It is a mistaken belief for you to think that other people all seem to be right. It is as though your statures are slightly mature and, having come into contact with some matters of the spirit or sayings about the spirit, you ultimately turn to dissecting yourselves, as though you are hugely important people. Doctors of theology don’t understand matters of the spirit; only God knows and understands them, so how could man understand them? Isn’t it easy for people to go astray? People nowadays all have this state within them. Although you may not always be seriously discussing these matters, and you may not become weak or fall down because of them, you can still be temporarily affected by those words of others. Though you may not pay much attention to this kind of matter, you still have those things within you, and a day comes when you genuinely do some things wrong and, when you suffer a setback and fall down, you then begin to doubt yourself, saying: “Can it be that there is something wrong with my spirit too?” Ordinarily, you don’t seem to have any doubts, and when you see others mired in doubt you think how absurd they are. If a day comes when you are dealt with, or someone else says you are Satan, or that you are an evil spirit, then you will believe it, and just like them you will become mired in doubt and will be unable to extricate yourself. In fact, most people are susceptible to this sickness, seeing matters of the spirit as incredibly important and putting the matter of their nature to one side. This makes them utterly divorced from reality and it is an experiential deviation. You should all pay attention to knowing which aspects of your nature can easily cause you to do wrong things or go astray, and you should, on this basis, summarize experience and lessons. Particularly in terms of serving, in terms of your experiences and in terms of knowing your own nature, you should gradually come to have a higher knowledge of these things, and only then will you be able to grasp your own states and develop in the correct direction. If you can possess these aspects of the truth and make them your inner life, then you will be much more secure, you will no longer make irresponsible remarks with things you don’t understand, you will speak to the point, and you will fellowship about real things. When people gain a deeper knowledge of their own nature and a deeper understanding of the truth, they will then speak more with a sense of propriety, and will no longer speak arbitrarily. Those who are without the truth are always simple-minded, and they dare to say anything; and there are some people who, when they are spreading the gospel, for the sake of converting a few more people they even have no scruples about paying the price of blaspheming against God, as a way to gain these people. They have no idea what they themselves are, they don’t know their own natures, and they do not fear God. Some people believe this isn’t a big deal, but is it really not a big deal? When a day comes when they recognize the seriousness of the problem, they will become afraid. What a terrible thing it is to have done this! They can’t see through to the essence of this matter, and they even think themselves so wise and that they understand everything; but they are unaware that they offend God and are unaware of how they will perish. It is futile for you to understand all matters to do with hell or the spiritual world if you don’t know your own nature.
The key now is to resolve the difficulties of man’s nature. You must grasp every one of the states revealed by your nature—if you cannot do this, then any other understanding is useless; if you cannot do this, then no matter how much you dissect yourself to see what kind of spirit you have or what kind of soul you have, it is all useless. It is crucial that you grasp all the different things that really exist within your nature. Now, no matter what kind of spirit you have within you, you are now a person, you have thoughts and you have a normal brain, so you should understand the truth and accept the truth. If you can understand the truth, then you should act in accordance with the truth—this is man’s duty. Deliberating over matters of the spirit is simply of no use to you. Those who have evil spirits who have already been exposed experience occasional periods of normality, and they will understand it if you fellowship the truth with them, and sometimes they will also be able to have some minor experiences. This is not the case, however, with those who have an abnormal sense and who are entirely possessed by demons. Apart from them, with regard to those who ordinarily have a normal sense, no matter what kind of spirit they have within them or their level of education, so long as they have an understanding of spiritual matters, then they are able to understand the truth, and that is enough. Though man does not have the faculty to accept the truth, they can still take it in, and their thinking is still effective with regard to the doctrinal aspect of the truth. This is something they are able to achieve. And so it is unnecessary for you to deliberate over what kind of spirit you have. It is not necessary now to comprehend or grasp what kind of spirit you have, whether or not your spirit can accept the truth or whether or not your spirit believes in God—this is not key. What is key is whether or not you yourself can accept the truth, whether or not you are now someone who seeks the truth, whether or not you are someone who is able to grasp their own states, and whether or not you are someone who knows their own nature—this is the most crucial matter. It is of no significance to deliberate over what kind of spirit you have, and it is even less of any value. If you are always deliberating over what kind of spirit you have, always deliberating over what the situation is with your soul, what your spirit does, what the end will be for your spirit, or what will happen to it in the future, then deliberating over these things will interfere with important matters. Even if you deliberate over this matter until you understand it thoroughly, when the day comes when everyone else understands the truth and they enter into reality, then you will have caused delays for yourself and you will have trapped yourself; this means that you will have gone astray, your whole belief in God will have been in vain and you will have gained nothing. When that time comes, who will you blame?
