How to Pursue the Truth (20) Part Three
Some people, when it comes to feelings or to dealing with things, do not know what’s correct and what’s incorrect. Likewise, they don’t know what’s correct and what’s incorrect when it comes to conduct between men and women either. For example, what distance to keep when interacting and associating with the opposite sex, what topics, remarks, and ways of acting to avoid, and what details to pay attention to in their daily speech and conduct—these are all things they do not know. This is difficult to understand—do normal people not all know that there must be boundaries in associating with the opposite sex? (Yes.) Is this something that needs to be taught? When one is a child, their parents might need to teach them this, but as one gradually grows up and becomes sensible, they naturally come to know these things without needing to be taught by their family or by society. It’s something innate, is it not? Knowing that there are boundaries between men and women is a quality of humanity. The qualities of humanity include conscience and reason, so people definitely know what it is to have a sense of shame. If you have a sense of shame, then you know how to treat the opposite sex. If you don’t know, and act without a sense of shame—not knowing what way of acting is right and what way is wrong, what way is appropriate and rational, and what way is excessive and crosses the line—then there is a problem with your humanity, because this is something a normal person should know at a bare minimum. If one knows these things and can adhere to them, then one possesses the conscience and reason of humanity; if one doesn’t know any of these things and even needs to be reminded and restrained by others, then this kind of person has a big problem. There is one type of person in particular who will not sit with people of the same sex when among others, but will specifically sit next to the opposite sex, and get very close to them—they don’t try to avoid this. When others prompt such a person, they even find it strange, saying, “What’s wrong with sitting close to each other? What could we possibly do in public? I’m a grown adult—do I need you watching over me? Why are you always singling me out?” They even have the nerve to say, “What could we possibly do in public?”—do they have any sense of shame? (No.) Is the issue that they actually have to do something? Or is it that, as long as they don’t do anything, they don’t have to observe the boundaries between men and women? Isn’t there a distinction between men and women? (Yes.) That being the case, there should be boundaries between them, and the maintenance of these boundaries is driven by the sense of shame within humanity. If you have a sense of shame, you will quite naturally maintain boundaries when interacting with the opposite sex; you won’t need others to supervise you, nor will you need to be restrained by the environment—you can do it yourself. If you lack even this bit of a sense of shame and need others to watch over you and prompt you, then one such as you is in great danger. Some people are particularly casual about matters between men and women, and will often wink and make eyes at the opposite sex, and get handsy with them. In particular, some people especially like to flaunt themselves in front of the opposite sex. The more members of the opposite sex are present, the wilder and more excited they get, and the more vigorously they flaunt themselves. Others find this inappropriate and undignified, yet they don’t feel it’s a problem, nor do they feel condemned by their conscience. Instead, they think, “This is very normal. Isn’t this how it should be between men and women? Aren’t women brought into this world for men? And men for women? What’s wrong with having a bit of fun together? Isn’t this a happy thing? Living as seriously as you do is so tiring! Haven’t you heard people say, ‘Men and women working together makes the load lighter’?” You see, they find any thought or view acceptable. In particular, they fully accept these fallacious thoughts and views, yet do not accept positive statements in the slightest—they even try to refute them, and feel resistant toward and reject them. If you try to give them a reminder, they are put off by it, and in their hearts they hate you and regard you with hostility. They do not accept anyone’s advice, and insist on acting this way. Some people may lose control or succumb to carelessness for a moment, occasionally acting a little dissolutely. Without needing to be reminded by others, they feel uneasy inside and feel that they must be careful in the future. This is the manifestation that a person with conscience and reason ought to have. But this other type of person has already gone too far and crossed the line in a severe way; they are already indulging in fleshly lust. Many people can’t stand seeing this. If they carry on like this, they will bring danger upon themselves, and they will be spurned and eliminated by God. Yet they do not care, and say, “What danger can there be in indulging in lust?” They actually have no awareness whatsoever. Some women in their twenties associate casually with the opposite sex, staying the night at men’s homes. If this were to get out, it would ruin their reputation, yet they somehow don’t care. Does such a person have a sense of shame? (No.) They have no sense of shame at all. Whether man or woman, if one has no lowest boundary in their heart regarding matters between men and women, and doesn’t know the meaning of the word “shame,” then this fully confirms that they do not possess the qualities of humanity. If a person does possess the qualities of humanity, and they occasionally make a mistake involving the opposite sex or do something that goes too far, they will regret it for a lifetime. Whenever they think of it, their face will get hot, and they will feel a faint prickling sensation in their heart; they’ll feel uncomfortable and ill at ease, not wanting to bring up the matter again, and hoping that such a thing never happens again in the future. What they did is a permanent stain to them. Normal people have a sense of shame and a lowest boundary regarding matters between men and women; they will control and rein themselves in, and not do such things. Even if they lose control for a moment and make a mistake with the opposite sex, they will feel regret. They will not compound their mistake, nor will they indulge themselves and let themselves degenerate when the environment permits it; instead, they will be reined in. How is this achieved? It is the good result you get from being restrained by your conscience and reason. Your conscience and reason will restrain and regulate you, and give you a lowest boundary, which is also your minimum standard for treating such matters; that is, they will help you avoid overstepping this lowest boundary and refrain from doing such things. Once weakness or some special reason causes you to be temporarily unable to overcome your urges and thus make a mistake with the opposite sex, you will feel disgust and loathing deep in your heart, and even feel remorse for a lifetime—it will not happen a second time in this life. However, people without humanity do not care when they do such things. They even broadcast it everywhere and see how they rank against others, thinking that this is a skill, that this is called having charm, and that this is called gaining an advantage—and that it would be a waste not to. If such people have the opportunity, will they do such things again? The answer is definitely yes—they absolutely will. They never feel upset having done such things, but instead show off about them. Is this not disgusting? (It is disgusting.) It’s already disappointing enough that they don’t feel upset, but they even show off, which is even more disgusting. What they do makes others feel contemptuous, yet they themselves feel no shame whatsoever; such people are not fit to be called a human. They often do such shameful things, and yet they do not feel ashamed, remorseful, or upset, and if there’s an opportunity or the conditions are right in the future, they will do them again—this is a manifestation of having no sense of shame. Then tell Me, if such a person does not practice the truth, will they feel upset or reproached? (No.) That’s right, they won’t feel upset or reproached either. Why is that? (Because they have no conscience or reason.) When it comes to doing shameful things, a person without conscience or reason doesn’t feel ashamed doing something that even nonbelievers would find shameful, nor do they feel remorseful or upset when they do it. It’s even less likely they’d feel upset when they do things that go against the truth, then, right? (Yes.) In the eyes of nonbelievers, not practicing the truth and not pursuing the truth is very normal; it is not considered disgraceful, nor is it considered going against human morality, because that’s how the majority of people are. Thus, it doesn’t make that kind of person feel anything. If a normal person gets pruned because they fail to practice the truth and go against principles, since they have conscience and reason, they will feel reproached in their heart, and their conscience will be uneasy. But when a person without conscience and reason does shameless things, or things that evoke contempt and disgust in others, they do not feel uncomfortable or uneasy. In their view, isn’t it perfectly normal for them to not practice the truth? They have no awareness whatsoever, so such people are beyond hope.
Tell Me, are those who can see through to what is right and wrong, correct and incorrect, many in number? Look at the people around you, including family, friends, and colleagues, and then look at the brothers and sisters. Among these people, are those who can discern and see through to what is right and wrong, and what is correct and incorrect, many or few in number? (Very few.) There are not many who can know what’s correct and what’s incorrect. That is to say, in this world, there are not many people with upright and kind humanity, not many who are fair and objective in their actions and speech, and who don’t run amok doing bad things, and not many who speak reasonably, and who don’t employ twisted reasoning. Especially among nonbelievers, such people are far too few. When you come into contact with any nonbeliever, you only need to hear them speak to know what sort of person they are. There is too much inaccuracy and adulteration in the words of nonbelievers. Most of them do not speak fairly and objectively; they speak based on their feelings and to protect their own interests. No matter what wrong words they say or what wrong things they do, they have no awareness of it deep in their hearts. As a believer in God, if one is like a nonbeliever in not knowing what’s correct and what’s incorrect in their speech and actions—and even though the words they speak and the viewpoints they hold to are wrong, they still blindly persist in them, regarding wrong viewpoints as positive things and the truth, and even using such viewpoints to replace the truth and God’s words—is there any hope for such a person to be saved? (No.) Some people have believed in God for twenty or thirty years, or even a lifetime, but they never know what positive things are and what negative things are, nor are they ever clear on what’s correct and what’s incorrect. As long as something is beneficial to them, they like it and defend it; if it is not beneficial to them, they say it is bad and wrong, and reject it. They’ve lived up to now with such a philosophy and attitude for worldly dealings, yet still claim they believe in God and want to be saved—is this not a joke? (It is.) They also claim they are followers of God and witnesses for God. What could they use to bear witness to God? They don’t even know what’s correct and what’s incorrect, yet they claim they want to bear witness to God—is this not utter nonsense? Would God use such muddleheaded people to bear witness to Him? (No.) It would be a disgrace to God for such people to bear witness to Him. They never feel that anything God does is right. Assessed using their thoughts and views, many things God does do not conform to their thoughts and views, nor do they conform to their notions, and of course, they do not conform to their fleshly interests either. Oftentimes, God’s words or God’s work go against their wishes, their personal desires and ambitions, and their personal interests of all kinds. Therefore, for some people who have believed in God for ten or twenty years, if you want to get them to say from the heart that “Everything God does is right and free from error,” that will be very difficult. It can be said that there is something hidden in their hearts. Having believed in God all these years, they possess firsthand experience: They feel that their desires have not been satisfied; they wanted to be an official but didn’t become one, and wanted to gain blessings but didn’t get them. It seems that God’s house treats them unfairly. They have grievances and a sense of being wronged in their hearts that they want to voice but cannot; they’re afraid that if they speak out, they will offend God, give others leverage to use against them, or fail to maintain their good image in people’s hearts. Thus, they keep many things bottled up inside. Just because they don’t say it out loud doesn’t mean that they don’t have thoughts or certain things in their hearts. And what are these so-called “things”? They are not these people’s positive comprehension and knowledge of God and His work, but rather their incomprehension, defiance, and resentment toward God, as well as the grievances they believe they have suffered, accumulated over so many years of believing in God. But because it is God who they believe in, they cannot say it. Why is there so much in their hearts that they cannot give voice to? There is a reason behind this too. This point alone is enough to show that they have not truly understood the truth despite believing in God for many years. They do not take pursuing the truth seriously in their belief in God. No matter what happens to them, they do not view things according to God’s words, nor do they seek the truth to find a path of practice. They have never accepted God’s words as the truth and as life. They do not treasure or place value on the truth, nor are they earnest about how to practice the truth. During their many years of believing in God, they have always stood in opposition to God, scrutinizing, prying into, and questioning God’s words, even resisting God’s words, or evaluating and judging God’s words and work with their so-called correct viewpoints. So, after believing in God for many years, they finally say something from the heart: “What have I gained from believing in God?” The implication is that they’ve gained nothing from believing in God. In their hearts, they believe they’ve suffered a lot and paid many a price in doing their duty in God’s house over the years, but their desire to gain blessings and their wish to pursue fame and gain have not been satisfied. Some even believe that God has not redressed the wrongs they’ve suffered, so they feel defiant, resentful, and full of grievance inside. For the sake of gaining blessings and for the sake of their destination, they have no choice but to aggrievedly perform a bit of their duty and do a bit of work in God’s house, but in the end, their hopes come to nothing and they gain nothing. Do people like this exist? There is at least a portion of such people. That they have gained nothing after believing in God for many years is due to their own problems. They do not have the ability to comprehend or understand the truth, and they follow God and do their duty with the intention to gain blessings. Although they have sincerely expended themselves somewhat, and have paid a great price and suffered a lot, they have never been interested in the words God speaks or the truths God expresses. They have never accepted them into their hearts, nor have they taken practicing the truth seriously. Therefore, they never know whether they possess the truth reality or not. They think, “We can fellowship on the truth and we understand some truths, so how can it be said that we do not possess the truth reality?” But they cannot write a single genuine experiential testimony article, so where is this truth reality of theirs? Their actions and deeds are still the same as those of nonbelievers; it’s just that their behavior has changed a bit compared to nonbelievers. With their ways and methods of conducting themselves, and their thoughts and views on all events and things—especially regarding positive things and negative things, and regarding what’s correct and what’s incorrect—they have never viewed things based on God’s words or the truth. Instead, they view everything according to their own thoughts and views. They believe that whatever they like is a positive thing, and whatever they hate is a negative thing. They never view people and things using God’s words as a basis, and they never seek the truth or accept the truth in the people, events, and things they encounter—they just follow their own wishful thinking to act, live, and do their duty according to their own desires, intentions, and preferences. They believe that their ability to forsake things, expend themselves, suffer, and pay a price means that they’ve already made a great contribution to God; they think that this is what it means to believe in God, and that this is pursuing the truth. They believe in the god they imagine in their hearts in their own way, and pursue the truth in their own way. When they are pruned for always acting arbitrarily and recklessly according to their own will in doing their duty, or when they are not used for important tasks in God’s house, they feel disheartened and disappointed. Eventually, they distill everything into one statement: “What have I gained from believing in God for so many years?” They really have gained nothing. The reason they have not gained the truth is that they do not pursue the truth; God cannot be blamed for this. This is because God does not show bias toward people, and nor does the truth. You have failed to gain the truth not because God has not given you the opportunity or because He hasn’t let you hear His words, but because you have heard God’s words yet do not ponder, think about, practice, or experience them. It is because you do not love the truth that you do not accept it. God has not sealed your eyes shut or sealed up your heart; rather, it’s your preferences and your preposterousness that have blocked your heart so that you cannot accept the truth. You have failed to gain the truth not because God hasn’t provided it to you, but because you have never liked reading God’s words, and you do not accept God’s words or the truth in your heart. You treat your own beliefs and viewpoints as the truth to pursue and submit to—do you want people to worship you as God? God’s words and God’s work are just a formality, a formula, to you; you have not pursued the truth and life at all. So, you believing in God could only end in one way—with you really having gained nothing. Why haven’t you gained the truth? This is not because God has not granted you grace, but because of the path you personally walk. God has given you many opportunities and earnestly and patiently exhorts and helps you, but you pay no heed. Nor do you accept being pruned either. You always pursue gaining blessings or pursue reputation and status, never quitting. Your ultimate failure to gain the truth is entirely caused by the path you personally have walked. You have not walked the path of pursuing the truth. This has nothing to do with God. God does not show bias toward people, and nor does the truth. Regardless of what your attribute is, as long as you are a human being, then even supposing that your ability to comprehend the truth might be a bit worse than that of a normal person, if you can nevertheless listen to God’s words with your heart, accept God’s words, and practice God’s words—despite the fact that you may only understand some doctrines and abide by some regulations—you can still gain something. Most people can do this, so why can’t you? Others listen to sermons and do their duty just the same, so why can they gain the truth, do their duty up to standard, and cast off their corrupt dispositions and submit to God, yet you cannot? God has arranged the environment for you to do your duty, hoping that you would understand the truth and be able to put it into practice. God has not hindered you, but you yourself always covet worldly things and fleshly pleasure, you do not eat and drink God’s words, and you are averse to and reject the truth in your heart. You uphold Satan’s philosophies and learning and knowledge as positive things and as the truth, while ignoring God’s words and the truth, regarding them as your enemy, as something in opposition to you. Since you do not love the truth in your heart, why do you believe in God? You believe in God but do not listen to God’s words or accept God’s words—could you still hope to be saved? You don’t accept the truth or cast off your corrupt dispositions, so how can you be saved? You do not accept God’s words and do not pursue the truth, yet still want to be accepted and recognized by God, this is a pipe dream; it will not work. You do not accept God’s words and do not accept the truth, so that means there is no place for God in your heart. You will only drift further and further from God. You will just be like a nonbeliever; it will be impossible for you to attain salvation.
