FThe main character has a happy family—they are well-off with two children, a mother, and a father. Then in December 2000, she is arrested and persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party because of her faith in God. Implicated through Communist Party policies, her husband, who works as a deputy head in the township government, later loses his chance to be promoted as a result. He uses the threat of divorce as leverage to pressure her into giving up her faith in an effort to get a chance at promotion, and her son threatens to leave the family.
