Two Die from Persecution in Changchun, Jilin—Nearly 20,000 CAG Members Arrested in 2024, Raising Global Concerns

March 11, 2025

On October 11, 2024, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) raided The Church Almighty God (CAG) in Changchun, Jilin Province, China, resulting in the arrest of 210 church members in a single day. Two CAG Christians were persecuted to death.

On October 11, Wang Yuxia, a 61-year-old CAG Christian, was taken into custody. On October 17, police claimed she died of a sudden heart attack. However, her body bore signs of severe abuse—her face was bruised, one eye socket was blackened, her neck was twisted unnaturally as if broken, and one of her legs was also fractured.

Wang Fuhua, a 49-year-old CAG Christian, was arrested the same day as Wang Yuxia. After nine consecutive days and nights of secret interrogations, police reported her death from a sudden heart attack on October 20. Individuals close to her, however, confirmed that she had been in good health prior to her arrest.

According to other CAG Christians arrested the same day, the police held them in hotels and subjected them to torture to extract information. They endured severe beatings, sleep deprivation (known as “Exhausting an Eagle”), starvation, confinement on tiger benches, and other perverted forms of cruelty.

An elderly CAG Christian was subjected to the “Exhausting an Eagle” torture for seven consecutive days—deprived of sleep, food, and water. On October 17, she collapsed and was revived only after taking emergency heart medication.

Another CAG Christian was slapped over 50 times during an interrogation and deprived of sleep for four days and five nights. Police forced him to strip down to his underwear, repeatedly doused him with cold water, and subjected him to extreme torture, including inserting a wooden pistol grip into his anus, and forcing a mustard-smeared toothbrush into his mouth, anus and private parts, and pulling out his pubic hair to stuff into his mouth.

A female CAG Christian was subjected to the “Exhausting an Eagle” torture for a full week, during which she was deprived of water or food. Police struck her head with bottled water, forced her onto a tiger bench, scratched her ribs with a key. They then placed a plastic bag over her head, loosening it only when she was on the verge of suffocating. This method was repeated for eight hours, causing her to lose bladder control and nearly suffocate multiple times. The police also removed her underwear and smeared mustard on her anus and genitals. She was tortured to the brink of despair, repeatedly wishing for death.

According to partial statistics, 9,762 CAG Christians were subjected to torture or forced indoctrination in 2024. Police reportedly told CAG Christians in custody, “We cannot change your beliefs, but we can destroy your bodies!”

In August 2023, the CCP Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission issued a secret directive to launch a three-year “Tough Battle” aimed at eradicating The Church of Almighty God, with 2024 marking the first year of the campaign. Internal CCP documents revealed that Xi Jinping attached “great importance” to the operations to suppress the church. Nearly 20,000 CAG members were arrested in 2024—a significant 53% increase from 2023 and the highest annual total in recent years..

On February 28, renowned religious freedom and human rights experts and scholars from Europe and America issued an appeal expressing their support of CAG Christians. In their appeal, they stated that the CAG is the Christian new religious movement most persecuted in China, suffering unprecedented brutal crackdowns from the CCP regime. They urged international organizations and democratic governments to include the mass persecution of tens of thousands of CAG members in human rights talks with China.
