Since March 19, 2025, police in Wulian and Ju Counties of Rizhao City, Shandong Province, have launched large-scale arrests of Christians from The Church of Almighty God (CAG), resulting in multiple church communities losing contact.
According to incomplete statistics, as of May 31, over 210 CAG Christians have been arrested in the two counties, including 82 individuals over 60 years old and more than 10 over 80. One elderly female CAG member died during detention, with the cause of death still under inquiry.
From March 19 to May 31, 97 CAG Christians were reportedly arrested in Wulian County, 44 of whom were in their 60s. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) employed extensive surveillance methods, including Skynet surveillance systems, drone tracking, and installing trackers on electric vehicles, to monitor CAG Christians over an extended period. After gathering evidence, authorities conducted coordinated arrests, leading to mass detentions. On April 10 alone, nearly 100 CAG Christians were arrested in Ju County, ranging in age from 18 to 86, including a Christian battling cancer.
According to informed sources, arrested Christians were sent to brainwashing centers for forced indoctrination and subjected to unlawful interrogations. One CAG Christian reported being forced to watch videos slandering and defaming The Church of Almighty God from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Police tried to force her to blaspheme against Almighty God and sell out fellow believers, threatening that failure to comply would result in continued detention. Additionally, authorities collected biometric data from detained Christians. Even many of those released on the same day were also subjected to blood sampling for undisclosed reasons.
As of the time of this report, arrests in Wulian and Ju Counties are ongoing, with some recently released Christians being re-arrested. In early June, two more CAG Christians were detained in Rizhao.
